Mercury in retrograde is an astrological occurrence that happens when the planet Mercury appears to be moving backward in its orbit, as observed from Earth. While, in reality, planets don’t reverse their orbits, this optical illusion occurs due to differences in their orbital speeds. Retrograde occurs in a heliocentric model roughly when a faster-moving planet – Earth – catches up to and passes a slower-moving planet – Mercury.

In reality, none of the planets is moving backward. It’s just not possible. However, the speed and our point of view (placement of the Earth) matter a lot, shaping not only our outlook on the world but also the flow of energy and the influence celestial bodies have on us.

It Happens All the Time

Mercury experiences retrograde about three to four times annually, each period lasting roughly three weeks. Whether welcomed or not, it’s a recurring event. The upcoming, fourth Mercury in retrograde phase will commence on December 13 and extend until January 1, 2024.

When Mercury is in retrograde, we can feel that things are just going out of control. As Mercury is the planet associated with communication, technology, and travel, people often attribute communication challenges, technological issues, and other disruptions to this period.

Communication Breakdown

Mercury is traditionally associated with communication, including verbal and written expression. During its retrograde phase, there’s a tendency for misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and communication breakdowns. This can manifest in various forms, from technological glitches to interpersonal conflicts. Be mindful of your communication. Avoid hasty conclusions, refrain from impulsive decisions, and double-check emails.Don’t sign contracts if you don’t fully feel comfortable with them.

Travel Woes

Mercury also rules travel and transportation. As it goes retrograde, disruptions in travel plans, delays, and unexpected obstacles may occur. If possible, be flexible with your travel arrangements. Expect delays and be patient if unexpected obstacles arise.

Technology Hiccups

Given Mercury’s association with technology, electronic devices may be more prone to malfunctions or glitches during this period. It’s wise to back up important data and approach technological endeavors with patience. Buying any tech products is not recommended during this period.

Stay Patient

As our biggest challenge in this lifetime is patience, we’ve learned one important thing about Mercury and its retrograde. When it gets back to its prograde track, it needs some time to regain its speed. So, don’t get overly optimistic (as we did so many times before) when you see that the retro period is over. You will experience a “shadow period” of  its adjustment that takes a couple of weeks. Wait patiently; things always get smoother in the end.
