Meditation practice is a journey. You embark on it to quiet your mind, soothe your soul, and experience the states of being that lie dormant within you. It’s the end of worries and suffering, as it lets you experience bliss and a state of oneness with the whole world. Sounds tempting, doesn’t it?
Meditation is simple, but it’s not easy.
Often, when we discuss meditation with others, we encounter those who have tried it but struggled to find success. Their minds, like unruly monkeys, resist control, making the idea of sitting still seem unbearable, causing them to lose interest in trying. But there is only one way to master meditation – and as obvious as it might sound – is to keep on trying. Only practice can eventually get us to befriend this beautiful art of stillness that frees us from the outer noise and calms our inner world.
Recognizing the challenges, we offer some useful tips that have helped us in our own meditation journeys to stay on a cushion, even when it didn’t seem so alluring at the beginning.
Mix stillness with movement
In a world that keeps on telling us that we need to keep pushing forward, staying still is more than a challenge. Before you sit on a pillow, do some yoga or qigong. Also, while sitting on a cushion, you can introduce gentle movements – neck and arm stretch or circular movements of the torso. Little movement can help you tap into moments of stillness. Just let your body guide you; don’t force the stillness; it will come to you.
Manage Your Expectations
If you lead an erratic or busy life, as we all do to some extent, developing the ability to control and silence your mind will take time and practice. Sometimes even a lot of time. No one can sit on a meditation set for the first time and have a truly transcendental experience. Feeling strange, stressed, or even bored is very normal. These feelings dissipate over time as you become accustomed to meditation.
Silence is optional
We have deeply ingrained in our heads a figure of a meditating monk, who sits in total silence. As there is no right or wrong way of approaching meditation, the soothing voice of a person conducting a guided meditation can be a solution that you will find relaxing and truly helpful in shutting down the hectic outer world. There are plenty of artists and healers who post their recordings on YouTube and Spotify – just find one that speaks to you. One of our favorites is the little-known Soneiro Collective, who has 15-minute-long chakra guided meditation we truly adore.
Cultivate Intention
Whenever something seems challenging for us, we try to remind ourselves of a simple truth – we engage in an activity we don’t feel like doing now, to have something we truly want in the future. Meditation serves plenty of benefits from lowering stress, ceasing depression, expanding awareness and boosting your vitality. It also offers so much more than that. It is a purely spiritual practice that helps to enlarge perception of the world and shifts our whole way of being. It’s one of the most transformative practices there is, that helps us grow and expand. Remember that in a moment of doubts.
Establish the Ritual
As Jay Shetty keeps on saying, places have an energy and time has a memory. Practicing at the same time and in the same place can help you tune in to the practice and will minimize the distractions.
Notice the progress
First, your mind will be scattered; it will be literally going in many directions at once, giving you a sensation that there are too many thoughts at once in your head. With practice, your mind will go from one subject to another. When you embody more calmness, you will be able to focus on one thing at a time for long periods of time. The focused mind, as it is called, is a gateway to the next, final step in which you experience that your mind becomes empty and you reunite with the Universe. The feeling is more than worth the effort.
Embrace the Ebb and Flow
Each day brings a different meditation experience.. Once it will go smoothly, another day you will need to keep on reminding yourself not to think about subjects and worries constantly popping into your mind. Embrace the difficulties with kindness. It’s just a reminder of how many things are going on in your life at once and how many subjects demand your attention and devotion.
